In this guide, I will help you with the text tool. This guide will show you how to select the text tool, create text, and edit the text in InDesign. You can begin using this guide by loading InDesign and opening a document to work on.

Locating & Selecting Your Text Tool in InDesign

Let’s begin with locating and selecting your text tool in InDesign. Your text tool is located in the toolbar on the left side of your screen. Find the T icon in the toolbar and that is your text tool. To select it, simply click the T icon.

Typing Your Text in InDesign

To begin typing your text in InDesign, you will first need to draw a text box on your document. So, use your mouse and draw a box on the document the size you want for your text. The size box will be determined by how much text you will be typing and what size you will make the text. Once you have your text box, you will see the cursor blinking in the box. Begin typing your text and you will see it appear in your text box.

Editing Your Text in InDesign

After you have typed the text in the box, you will probably want to edit it. By default, when you add new text, it is really small. So, in order to edit your text, you will first need to highlight it with your mouse. Then go to the top of InDesign and drop the text size box down and select the new size you want. Then open the font box and select the font you want to use. If you want to change the color of the text, find the little T icon in the bottom of the toolbar on the left. It will have a red line through it. Double click that icon and you can change the color in that box. Once you select a color, click the OK button and the text will change colors.
